The Gulf-Atlantic Athletic Conference (GAAC) is thrilled to announce the newest member of our Baseball Operations Committee—Todd Self, a former Major League Baseball player. Todd's incredible journey of resilience and skill is an inspiring story for aspiring athletes everywhere.

Todd's baseball career kicked off at Louisiana College, a small NAIA institution in Pineville, Louisiana. Here, in an environment often overlooked by major league scouts, Todd made his mark through unwavering commitment. After 3 years at LC, Todd transferred to University of Louisiana - Monroe (ULM) where his hard work and passion eventually led to his selection by the Houston Astros, realizing his dream of playing at the highest level of professional baseball.

As Todd joins the GAAC, he brings a wealth of experience and insights. His unique background will contribute significantly to shaping the future of collegiate baseball in our conference.

From Small Beginnings to Major Leagues

Todd faced numerous challenges on his way to a professional career. Many talented players in small colleges struggle to gain recognition, but Todd's remarkable performance set him apart. Through thousands of hours on the field and learning from every game, he drew the attention of scouts on the lookout for untapped talent.

In 2000, Todd's persistence paid off when he was drafted in the 15th round by the Houston Astros. This achievement was not just a personal victory but a powerful reminder that talent can shine anywhere, irrespective of the size or visibility of the college. According to the NCAA, only about 0.5% of college baseball players make it to the professional level. Todd's success story exemplifies that determination and dedication can make a significant difference.

With his rise to the major leagues, Todd not only achieved his lifelong dream but also gained invaluable insights. Now, he’s focused on giving back to the community that helped nurture his talent. He recognizes the critical role of mentorship in guiding young athletes and is excited to help others navigate their paths.

A New Chapter with the GAAC

Joining the GAAC's Baseball Operations Committee signals an exciting next step for Todd. His responsibilities will center around improving the experience for student-athletes and coaches throughout the conference.

The GAAC aims to create better opportunities for athletes, and Todd's journey as a small-college player who succeeded at the highest level aligns perfectly with that mission. He knows firsthand the unique hurdles student-athletes face and is committed to ensuring they have the resources needed to thrive both on and off the field.

Todd plans to work closely with committee members to develop programs enhancing scholarship access, training resources, and competition standards. His mission is to create accessible pathways to success for all players, ensuring that their ambitions are within reach.

Shaping Future Leaders in Baseball

One of Todd's primary goals as a GAAC member is mentoring young athletes. He believes in the importance of sharing experiences and insights that guide players through their journeys.

By telling his own story, Todd aims to inspire athletes to chase their dreams with relentless determination. He understands the significance of hard work, persistence, and seizing moments when they arise. Through mentorship initiatives, Todd seeks to instill a culture of resilience in the upcoming generation of baseball players.

Todd's insights will be vital as the conference evolves to support its student-athletes in a changing landscape. His own experiences navigating the journey from small college to the professional arena can make a substantial impact.

Community Engagement and Development

Todd’s role on the Baseball Operations Committee goes beyond shaping the game; it’s also about nurturing a sense of community. The GAAC values local engagement, and Todd's love for baseball can inspire involvement from those around him.

By planning events, workshops, and seminars, the conference can connect collegiate sports with the broader community. Todd's experience contributes fresh ideas on fostering fan engagement, promoting programs, and encouraging local support for college baseball.

Baseball possesses a unique ability to unite communities. Todd’s influence can help expand this spirit, ensuring that the game thrives not just in the conference but also in wider communities.
